Married in Greece
reg - 23 April, 2017 02:46PM
Hi looking for some advice. My partner got married in Greece seventeen years ago. His ex wife won't give him the marriage certificate to start divorce proceedings so he is planning a trip to Greece to get a copy. His ex wife has told him that as they didn't register the marriage at their local registry office in the U.K. On their return that they are not legally married and therefore do not have to get divorced. He did not know that he should have registered the marriage also in the U.K. Does anyone know if this is the case.

They are married. It makes no difference if the marriage has not been 'registered' in the UK. If they were validly married in Greece then they are married and if your partner wants to remarry he needs a divorce.

I thought so, she is just trying it on. He is off to Kos in four weeks time so at least he can get a copy of the wedding certificate and get the ball rolling.

Thanks
